As a first-generation college student coming from a single-parent household, it became my responsibility to fully understand the college application process as my mom didn’t have much time outside of working to support our family. I advise because, I know that the application process can be very confusing to those going through it for the first time. Several students in my high school only knew to stay in-state for schools, something I did not see fror myself, but anything else seemed impossible. With the help of my guidance counselor, I developed the tenacity to research and compile a balanced college list that included some of my dream out-of-state schools. Without that support, I would have never been able to look past staying in Florida and I never dreamed that I could make going out-of-state affordable. My goal as an adviser is to get my students to the institutions that best match them not only academically, but as an individual.
